In every circumstance, in every moment of every day, you have a choice. It doesn’t matter what circumstance you may be facing. It doesn’t matter where you are in your life or the excuses you’ve made about how you react in certain ways.
You still have one choice that can change everything.
This choice can make disaster joyful or more painful and more depressing. It can make temptations stronger or almost –if not completely- non-existent. It can take a moment to be celebrated and turn it into a pity party because you didn’t experience the victory or it can turn defeat into celebration.
It’s really up to you.
This choice is part of every decision that is ever made. It is all around you at every moment and you can’t hide from it.
So, what is it?
What you focus on, you empower. What you empower determines your reaction. Every decision you’ve ever made is because of a focus that you had at that time. It can make bad days good or good days bad… it just depends on your focus.
In the beginning, everything seen was created by the unseen. A GOD that couldn’t be seen, since HE is Spirit, made everything that we call Creation, what we can see. He created the flesh. He created you. He created you to live in His presence. To be so focused on Him and others that even though you were naked, you were not ashamed.
The Original Overcoming Nature Of Humanity
In that first moment when man wasn’t distorted from his original nature, he was just like God – made in HIS image and likeness. And in that image, he lived free. Free from his own judgments and his own condemnation. Free from his own guilt and shame.
That original nature didn’t need to be taught to live in harmony with creation. It did it naturally. It didn’t need to be taught how to love and be loved; it did so naturally.
Why? Because the first man and his wife had their focus completely off of themselves and on God. And that focus empowered God to be their love, to be their desire, to be their everything.
Then Came Distortion…
But, then… one lie came and that perfect focus was miss-directed. In that moment, the pure nature of man was distorted because the focus turned from God to themselves. It turned from looking outward toward God and His creation, to inward toward their own insecurities and nakedness.
And with it came a feeling of unworthiness, a feeling of guilt and shame, a feeling of being naked.
Years and years of this kind of bad focus kept ruining God’s perfect creation and with it came the distortion of the human mind that started living in havoc. Given in to inward distortion, humanity reached higher and higher levels of sinful living.
Then God, who loved His creation dearly, while they were in their lowest of lows, HE sent Jesus, His beloved Son, to put an end to a focus gone bad.
So, Jesus came showing man what it looked like for a man to live in the nature he was intended to live in. In a nature that was focused on God and others, that was built on perfect relationships.
But HE (Jesus) didn’t stop there. In an incredible display of love, He took on all sin and all lies that had ruined humanity’s focus and died once and for all for all sinful flesh, in the past, present, and future.
But, even that wasn’t the end of it. He then goes and destroys death itself, and empowered us to live above every lie and every circumstance by placing the actual LIFE of God, the HOLY SPIRIT, inside of us, available to all who believe.
He paid everything for you, for us, for all of humanity. Everything.
All because He loved us and wanted us to live life abundantly. He did it all so that you could live by the Spirit of God instead of by the flesh, so that you could be restored to the original nature of humanity.
Restored Your Ultimate Destiny…
To live a life of servant hood that isn’t focused inward toward our own lusts that destroy our lives, but to live a life focused on God HIMSELF and HIS creation, is your ultimate destiny. It’s who you were created to be as a human being that is made in the image and likeness of God HIMSELF.
It’s a life of focus on the life of God within you and around you that empowers you to live in the pleasure and presence of God no matter what chaotic circumstances may surround you.
This is the reason that Paul can write how thrilled he was to be persecuted for Christ. The persecution he faced didn’t decide his outlook, Jesus did.
It’s all about focus. You focus right and every problem seems to disappear. Focus wrong and every problem seems impossible.
This focus thing is also how Heidi Baker started laughing when rebel forces in Africa had machine guns pointed toward her head. Its how all the martyrs you read about could keep preaching and praying while being burned at the stake.
You focus right, you can look the biggest giant in the eyes, and without a flinch or hesitation, and you’ll see it fall down in front of your eyes as if it were nothing. You’ll conquer any and every problem every day with an unstoppable sense of joy, hope, and love.
How To Focus Right
So, now for the big question I’m sure you’ve been thinking: how does one get the right focus and live in it?
Basically, it comes down to a deliberate choice to be aware of and focused on the Spirit of God at all times.
One of the things I mentioned in the beginning of this article is that the unseen created the seen. This means that the unseen is more powerful and more real than the seen.
The Bible says that in God we live and have our being. Essentially, this means that you can’t get away from the presence of God because HE is everywhere. The universe wasn’t created outside of God. The universe is in God.
Through the Spirit of God living in us, we get to live completely aware of the Spirit at all times and when we do so, incredible things happen. Not only do we live an abundant life full of the fruit of the Spirit, but also we get to increase the growth of the Kingdom of God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus made a statement early in His ministry that He only does and says what the Father does and says. Just as He could see what the Father was doing, we can do the same.
It’s all about focus.
Take a radio, for example. If I want to listen to a certain station, I need to tune into it or no matter how hard I try I won’t hear it. And if the signal is weak, I can barely hear it.
It’s the same way for focusing in on the Spirit. Just tune in. At first your signal seems to be a little weak, but as time goes on it seems to get stronger and stronger. It’s simply a matter of focusing on every thought. Take every thought captive that’s from Him and hang on to it. As you do this more and more, you soon find out that He talks a lot to you. You just need to listen.
The crazy thing is that a lot of the time it comes through the sound of your own voice or your own thoughts, but as you soak in the Word of God, you’ll start discerning what are your thoughts and what are God’s thoughts.
As you go throughout your day you’ll notice where your focus is by the actions that you take. If your actions line up with the fruit of the Spirit, then you know that your focus was on the Spirit in that moment. If your actions line up against the fruit of the Spirit, you know that your focus was on yourself and your fleshly, sinful desires.
With that, you need to know that I’m not saying that the flesh is completely evil. If it were, then God did a bad job creating us. The flesh is a way for you to live in the Spirit and display the fruit of the Spirit. A super focused spiritual man will be a man that serves his body by eating good food and exercising to keep the body in tip top shape. Why? Because he knows that a body in tip top shape will increase his energy and stamina in the Spirit.
God’s Will For Your Life
If you, at any time aren’t rejoicing always, in continual communion and communication with God, and aren’t thankful in every circumstance, you’re living less then God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. And this is only available with a focus on the Spirit.
When you focus on the Spirit, it’s impossible to be lacking any joy, because in the presence of God is the FULLNESS of JOY! It’s also impossible to be without unconditional love, because HE is LOVE. It’s also impossible to be in a place where your soul is not at peace, because HIS PEACE surpasses understanding.
In the moment when you live in the Spirit, you become earthly powerful. You’ll start seeing every moment and every living thing through eyes of wonder and glory. You’ll start enjoying the simple things of life. And you’ll realize that its not about working toward faith, but rather resting in faith, in HIS faith. You’ll see that when you do that, you’ll actually start naturally producing good works. It’s because of your focus.
Think about it. Adam and Eve, in the garden, they took care of everything and named all the animals. That’s hard work, but because of their focus, it was part of who they were. It came from a place of resting in the presence of God. This is why Paul writes that we need to work as if we’re working for God. Or simply put, focus on God and the Spirit in your work and you’ll naturally be the hardest and best worker.
Be Perfect Like God Is Perfect
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told us to be perfect like God is perfect. Which is impossible. But then you ask, “Why would Jesus tell us to be perfect if were impossible?”
He knew that if we tried to be perfect we would fail miserably every time. It is impossible for us to try to be perfect. However, I guarantee that if you focus on the Spirit of God and only live by the Spirit 100% of the time you will be perfect. He gave us the power to live perfectly through the Holy Spirit.
It’s our job to focus on Him because He completes us. He IS everything to us. It’s not up to us to be perfect, it’s up to HIM and we get to follow along.
When you focus on HIM, you empower HIM to be the LORD of your life. This way you can boast in your weaknesses because you know where you are weak HE is strong. Which means, in your weakness, He’ll make you strong. And when you are strong in HIM, you can do anything.
All things are possible for those who believe.
Believe what? Believe that He’s strong and that HE makes you strong.
And in that moment, when you believe HIM, every problem you will ever face, no matter how difficult, is already solved.
As you see His strength and who HE is, you become just like Him because you’re made in His image and likeness.
So, I leave you with one question:
What if, instead of focusing on your problem, you would instead focus on HIS strength?
